Understory Farm and Orchard began in 2012 as the project of Matt Steele and Chanterelle Vogtmann, two Michigan natives with a shared passion for farming and for the environment.
The farm itself was managed conventionally as an apple and tart cherry orchard prior to 2012 and building the soil to its current state as been our rewarding task since then.
Since the disastrous year of 2012, the farm has continued to grow and better fulfill its mission of promoting community and environmental health. Now in its 6th season, the farm continues to change and is happy to announce our commitment to health as a certified organic grower for 2017.
Matt draws on his time as an intern at Eaters’ Guild Farm in Bangor, MI as well as studies in food science at Michigan State University for guidance in managing the farm.
